A Chapter That Manages Its Finances Well Is a Chapter That Can Focus on Its Mission.

When the books are clean, the reports are accurate, and the fiscal officers are equipped, your chapter's energy goes where it belongs — into the community.

Lotis Y. Johnson, CPA, PLLC provides Collegiate and Alumnae chapters of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. with the external Independent CPA financial statement audits, reviews and treasury advisory services that keep your finances strong and your leadership confident.

You already know the deadline. You already know what happens if the report is not in the Red Zone on time and in compliance. What you need is a CPA who knows it too; one who understands the process, does not need the chapter to explain Delta, and delivers a complete report ready for upload.

Financial Statement Preparation

Before a review or audit can be performed, your chapter's financial statements must be prepared.

Lotis Y. Johnson, CPA, PLLC takes your chapter's raw financial data and consolidates it into properly formatted financial statements in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).

This includes the statement of financial position, statement of activities, statement of cash flows, and statement of functional expenses; along with the notes to the financial statements that provide the additional context and disclosures required for a complete and accurate financial picture. Now your financial data is in the correct format to be reviewed or audited. These financial statements are required  as part of your annual compliance submission.

Financial statement preparation is offered alongside every review and audit engagement; so your chapter arrives at the table ready.

Financial Statement Review

Magnifying-glass.jpg

An external Financial Statement Review by an independent CPA is required when your chapter's gross receipts meet the applicable threshold set by the Grand Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. The Review engagement provides limited assurance that your chapter's financial statements are free from material modifications and prepared in accordance with GAAP.

The engagement begins with a signed engagement letter that defines the scope of services and confirms the correct level of engagement for your chapter. The review consists primarily of inquiries of your chapter's fiscal officers and analytical procedures applied to your financial data. A representation letter from your fiscal officers is also required prior to the issuance of the review report.

Upon completion of the engagement, your chapter receives at least two deliverables; an Independent Accountant's Review Report, including the prepared financial statements, ready for upload to the Red Zone and a Management Letter for internal use that outlines any findings, observations, and recommendations identified during the engagement.

Financial Statement Audit

An external Financial Statement Audit by an independent CPA is required when your chapter's gross receipts meet the applicable threshold set by the Grand Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. It is the most comprehensive external examination available designed to provide reasonable assurance that your chapter's financial statements are free from material misstatement.

The engagement begins with a signed engagement letter that defines the scope of services and confirms the correct level of engagement for your chapter. Because the audit is designed to provide a greater assurance that a Review, it goes beyond inquiry and analysis. It includes assessment of your chapter's internal controls, verification of account balances, examination of receipts and disbursements, and confirmation of receipt and remission of dues. More data will be requested for an audit and inquiries will extend to third parties. A representation letter from your fiscal officers is also required prior to the issuance of the review report.

Upon completion of the engagement, your chapter receives at least two deliverables; an Independent Auditor's Report, including the prepared financial statements, ready for upload to the Red Zone and a Management Letter for internal use that outlines any findings, observations, and recommendations identified during the engagement.

An unmodified audit opinion gives your chapter leadership, your membership, and Grand Chapter the highest level of confidence in your financial reporting.

Treasury Advisory Services

You did not volunteer to be treasurer or financial secretary so you could spend hours manually entering transactions, cross-referencing receipts, reconciling spreadsheets, and still wonder if the numbers are right. You have a career, a family, chapter programs to support, and community service to deliver. The financial officer role was never supposed to consume your life — but manual accounting has a way of doing exactly that.

Every transaction entered by hand is time you are not getting back. Every spreadsheet that does not reconcile is an evening you spend troubleshooting instead of living. And when your term ends and you hand off a binder of spreadsheets to the incoming officer, the cycle starts all over again — for her.

Manual accounting is time-consuming, error-prone, and puts the entire financial picture of your chapter in the hands of whoever built the spreadsheet. When that person rotates out, the system goes with her. What stays behind is a gap in continuity that the next treasurer or financial secretary has to fill from scratch; often without documentation, often under deadline, and often alone.

The risk is not just your time. It is your chapter's financial integrity. One missed transaction, one unreconciled balance, one quarter where the numbers do not tell the full story — and the internal audit findings reflect it. Your chapter deserves better. So do you.

There is a better way. Lotis Y. Johnson, CPA, PLLC offers Treasury Advisory Services to help your chapter move from manual bookkeeping to a streamlined accounting system; with training designed specifically for the duties of the chapter treasurer and financial secretary. Choose the platform that works best for your chapter.

QuickBooks Online

qbo_edited.jpg

QuickBooks Online is one of the most widely recognized accounting software platforms available. It is cloud-based, accessible from any device, and designed to keep financial records organized, accurate, and audit-ready.

Our QuickBooks Online training is designed for two audiences; chapters making the transition from manual accounting to a digital financial system, and chapters that already have QuickBooks Online but have never received formal training on how to use it specifically for chapter financial management. Wherever your chapter is starting from, this training meets you there.

The training covers everything your treasurer and financial secretary need to manage the chapter's day-to-day finances with confidence; including initial account setup, recording member dues and other receipts, processing reimbursement disbursements, and running the financial reports your internal audit chair needs to complete her quarterly reviews. Training is delivered through self-paced video modules inside our Skool community; where you can ask questions, access live sessions, and stay connected with other fiscal officers navigating the same responsibilities.

One more thing worth knowing: as a licensed CPA, Lotis Y. Johnson, CPA, PLLC can provide access to QuickBooks Online at a discounted subscription rate — whether your chapter is converting from manual accounting or already on QuickBooks. If reducing your chapter's software costs is a priority, reach out before you renew or subscribe.

MoneyMinder

Money Minder is an accounting software built specifically for volunteer-led nonprofit organizations. Unlike QuickBooks Online, which was designed for small businesses, Money Minder is built around the financial structure and reporting needs of organizations exactly like yours; making it a natural fit for Delta chapters that want a simpler, more affordable alternative.

For chapters currently on QuickBooks Online and paying for features they will never use, Money Minder offers the same core functionality at a fraction of the cost. For chapters still on manual accounting, Money Minder is the most straightforward path to a fully digital financial system; with a learning curve designed for volunteers, not accountants.

Our Money Minder training covers everything your treasurer and financial secretary need to get up and running; including initial account setup, recording member dues and other receipts, processing reimbursement disbursements, and running the financial reports your internal audit chair needs to complete her quarterly reviews. Training is delivered through self-paced video modules inside our Skool community; where you can ask questions, access live sessions, and stay connected with other fiscal officers navigating the same responsibilities.
